What Are Article Processing Charges (APCs)?
Article Processing Charges (APCs) are fees paid by authors, institutions, or funders after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. APCs help cover the costs associated with:
- Editorial management and peer review coordination
- Copyediting, typesetting, and formatting
- Digital publication and hosting
- Metadata creation and indexing support
- Long-term digital preservation
- Open access dissemination (where applicable)
Important: APCs have no influence on editorial decisions. Manuscripts are evaluated solely on academic merit, originality, and ethical compliance.
When Do APCs Apply?
APCs may apply in the following cases:
- Open access journal articles
- Certain book chapters or edited volumes
- Conference proceedings published under open or hybrid models
- Special issues or thematic collections (where specified)
Each journal or publication clearly states its APC policy on the respective journal homepage.
What APCs Do Not Cover
APCs are not charged for:
- Manuscript submission
- Peer review evaluation
- Desk rejection decisions
- Editorial assessment prior to acceptance
No payment is requested before acceptance.
